Well, I don’t know about May Flowers, but right now I am in life and death war with my yard and it doesn’t want to go easily into the night.    What you say?  You are trying to kill off your yard?

Incredibly, yes.    Living in the southwest is not conducive to grass, and anyone who tries to convince you otherwise is fooling themselves (and paying an arm and a leg in water bills).   7/8 of my yard front and back are rock.  We had it all cleaned up when we first moved in, all the weeds gone and the trees and bushes trimmed.  What I didn’t know was that I should have been doing the equivalent of salting the ground at this time to keep weeds from taking over the place.

But I didn’t know that and here we were in February with a veritable jungle of weeds that seemingly sprung up overnight. OK, Ok they didn’t spring up overnight.  I saw the warning sprouts and ignored them to my peril. And so here I am, fighting the weeds.  The last two weekends I spend dousing the yard and weed growth with a potent brew of Round Up.  Except, the first round didn’t kill the harder weeds and I had to go back with another assault, (and finish the front yard).

Don’t believe those intoxicating messages on the front the Round Up bottles. Your weeds don’t magically die off in 24, nay 12 hours (as advertised).  It takes a good 3-4 days and even then you start to wonder….

I know my battle plan.  Kill off the bad stuff, sprinkle the ground with the anti-growth stuff and then I can get to planting in the planters and places that I do want things to grow.  I’ve managed to salvage our grapefruit tree that I swear was committing suicide. Now I have side-dreams of above the ground planters filled with herbs and veggies.  (Ok, so I know it’ll start heating up soon and I won’t be able to grow anything in the summer. But one can dream right?) Our Bougainvillea is growing back nicely though and the fruit trees are doing better.  I plan on planting a lemon tree and maybe even a dwarf avocado tree.

Still on the home improvement list is to fix the dryer and rip out the bathroom sink and replace it with the new vanity we have waiting in the garage.
